The S2 STEM day continues. People move from challenge to challenge, trying new things and making new friends. These S2’s are attempting to decipher codes and ciphers. They have learnt about the genius code-cracker from the 1940’s and WWII called “Alan Turing”. The activity is run by “Mr Gilchrist” in the maths.
The S2’s learnt about different types of codes such as “Random Break”, “Zigzag”, “Square”, “Polybius”, “Rectangle and Nulls”, “Caesar’s” Alphabet” and “Code Words and Key Numbers”.
The class was a mixed bag of some that had done code deciphering and those that have not. Despite this, everyone was doing well with the cracking.
Here is an interview with an
anonymous pupil in the activity.
G: So what are you learning in this challenge?
-: How to crack codes
G: Are there any famous people known for code breaking that you’ve learnt about?
-: Alan Turing
G: Have you done code-breaking before today?
G: How good are you?
-: I’m quite good
